Kerry Dark Sky Reserve Experience near Sneem

In 2014, The international Dark Sky Association recognised the 700sqKM area around Sneem as a Gold Tier Dark Sky Reserve. This Kerry Dark Sky Reserve became the first Gold Tier Reserve in the Northern Hemisphere. Futhermore, it was one of only four such reserves in total in the world.

Being located between the mountains and the Sea blesses the Ring of Kerry area with minimal nocturnal light pollution. Lack of light pollution offers wonderful views of the constellations, the Milky Way, falling stars, faint meteors and zodiacal light. The Reserve Area we're talking about stretches from Caherciveen to the outskirts of Sneem.

For a particularly well positioned Dark Sky Reserve viewing spot, try Staigue Fort. It offers clear views of the stars. Another is Derrynane beach with its extensive low lying surroundings.

Interested guests can borrow binnoculars, a star chart and a headtorch with a red light. The red light allows you have sufficient light to orient yourself but does not affect your night vision. You can then spend as long you like enjoying the experience before calling it a night.
